How Are Boxers Transported to the Ring?

by admin on November 29, 2011

New York’s Madison Square Garden will host the Boxing Super Welterweight WBA World Championship on the 3rd of December 2011 between Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito.  In anticipation of this fantastic fight, let’s look at some logistical issues, mainly how do boxers actually get transported to the ring on the day of the fight?

It really depends on the boxer’s personal preferences.  Many boxers like SUVs as they are very roomy.  They tend to use vehicles with tinted windows, so they are not recognised by passers-by.  They obviously want to be comfortable and be able to prepare themselves for the upcoming match.

There have been some situations, however, where boxers have needed specialised vehicles, for example if they have received death threats from deranged fans.  Most people, for example, will remember the situation surrounding Edwin Valero.  Although all charges against him were dropped, he was alleged to have beaten his wife.  This is unacceptable at all times, of course, but for a boxer – particularly one with a reputation for knock-outs like Edwin Valero – to put his hands on a woman really is unheard of.  Unsurprisingly, he received many death threats.  He was initially moved to a psychiatric facility in an armoured vehicle, including helmet and bulletproof vest.  Although he has now been able to remove these, he is still worried about his own personal safety and has been known to drive in blacked out, armoured vehicles since.

Clearly, the vehicles that are used to transport a boxer from the training camp to the match will vary depending on the boxer, for real amateurs you may even be expected to drive yourself or use public transport.  For the big fighters, however, the SUV tends to be the vehicle of choice, unless there is reason to believe that there are safety issues with the boxers themselves.
